| All trips on Thursday depart LIU at 8:45 am unless otherwise noted. Some trips will return to LIU by 4:00 pm, and then travel to the Sunset Dinner Cruise and others will go directly to Pier 81 for the Sunset Dinner Cruise aboard the Temptress. People on these trips should bring whatever they will need for the evening with them when they depart LIU in the morning. Field trip participants whose trip ends at Pier 81 but who are not planning to take the evening cruise will have the opportunity to explore the city on their own Thursday evening, or return to LIU via bus. All trips, whether by Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus or subway, will be escorted by trip leaders and assistants. | Join the education staff at Alley Pond Environmental Center for a trek in the salt marsh, fresh water and woodland trails in an urban setting. Then take a beach walk and participate in a water study. Tour culminates with a visit to Fort Totten, built during the Civil War with secret tunnels, mine and torpedo rooms. You will enjoy commanding views of the place where the East River meets the Long Island Sound. Transportation will be by bus, returning to L.I.U. before going to the Temptress evening cruise. | ||

| Visit Brooklyn College’s Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC) to hear about re-circulating computer-controlled aquatic systems, aquaculture and ecosystem modeling, and biomedical research. View the breeding and rearing of salt and freshwater organisms, highlighted by AREAC’s horseshoe crab and tilapia captive breeding programs. After visiting AREAC, we will travel by bus to the Audubon Center in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, which, like Central Park, was designed by renowned architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 19th century. At the Audubon Center, we will ride on the Independence, an electric boat, to see some wetland habitats close-up. Bird sightings walk or audio tour are included. After lunch, we will board the bus again to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s beautiful natural setting and some of its enclosed exhibits such as one on tropical aquatic environments. Connections between the Catskill watershed in upstate New York and the wetland watersheds of New York City will be featured, and curriculum materials will be provided. Join Dery Bennett and Pam Carlsen, leaders from the American Littoral Society’s tag and release program for a fish tagging talk and demonstration aboard the boat and then fish for summer fluke. | The Working Harbor Committee is a non-profit educational group with the mission of making more New Yorkers aware of the New York/New Jersey Harbor's vital role in the city’s history, and in their own lives today. Take a Hidden Harbor boat tour from New York’s working waterfront to the harbor’s little-known nooks. The Circle Line will guide us through the Hudson’s liner piers, including ship ports with old vessels and thriving ship repair and containership facilities. | Join the staff of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater for a three hour sail. America’s Environmental Flagship, the Clearwater was launched in 1969 by folksinger and activist Pete Seeger to help protect the Hudson River. We will raise the two ton mainsail, help navigate the vessel, and learn about the fishes and chemistry of the estuary, as well as the history of the Hudson River. Transportation will be by subway. Following this trip, you will have time to take the subway back to LIU and then travel to the Temptress by charter bus or do your own sightseeing and then meet at the Temptress for the dinner cruise | ||

| 6. Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum | ||
| Berthed on the Hudson River in Manhattan is the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, a National Historic Landmark that served in World War II and Vietnam. During our visit, we will view the historical re-creation Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light. While here, you can also ride in the A-6 Cockpit Simulator, visit the Virtual Flight Zone, or tour the inside of the Concorde, the world’s fastest commercial airplane. Our visit includes hearing about underwater archeology excavation methods as ways of learning about New York City’s maritime history. After lunch, we will participate in a waterways workshop, sampling water to examine the biology and chemistry of the Hudson River. Opportunities for touring the museum follow the workshop. Our evening cruise leaves from the neighboring pier. | The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Institution of Columbia University reveals its explorations in marine geology, physical and chemical oceanography, marine biology, and climate change. Invited research scientists will talk about their cutting-edge investigations during a tour of the largest collection of ocean floor materials from its deep sea sample repository. After the LDEO visit, those who are interested will go kayaking or canoeing on the Hudson River in the thousand-acre salt marsh of nearby Piermont. Learn about the area's geology, hydrology and importance in American history, or pass the time in the antique and art shops and beautiful Flywheel Park of Piermont. This exhibit is housed in the renovated Schermerhorn Row, a block of early 19th-century warehouses that stands in the center of the Seaport historic district.
